Porsche. Stuttgart. Solitude.

The citizens of Stuttgart have to wait two years until it’s time again and the Stuttgart car manufacturers present themselves again on the historic Solitude racetrack. 2019 is the year again and Porsche presents itself in best weather with true treasures from the museum and numerous racing legends on and off the track. Porsche a sports car manufacturer to touch, to experience, shows racing cars from the glorious times of the Solitude race track and brings current racing drivers together with racing legends to the track. And that’s fun for everyone who is part of the Solitude Revival 2019. The legends are available for autograph requests and have a lot of fun themselves.
Porsche 550 Spyder, 718 Formula 2, Porsche 804, Porsche 904, various Porsche 917 as well as Porsche 914, Porsche 356 and numerous Porsche 911 from all decades are on the way on the course optimally prepared by the organizer Solitude Revival.

Legends such as Herbert Linge, Eberhard Mahle, Hans-Joachim Stuck, Walter Röhrl, Marc Lieb or Stéphane Ortelli, well prepared by the Porsche Museum, will be on hand to answer questions at numerous autograph sessions and presentations in the Porsche Museum tent. The Porsche Museum also presents itself in the best way for the spectators and offers them plenty of space to take a short breather in the spacious event area.

Now the 15th edition of the Solitude is also history and we have to wait another two years to experience history and legends live in Stuttgart… or we go to the Porsche Museum and experience the history of Porsche and a little Solitude Live there.

Goodwood 2019 – The R6 RSR

The Original

Sunday 13 May 1973, the weather is warm and dry around the 72 kilometre long race track of the 73rd Targa Florio on the Italian island of Sicily. Over 700,000 spectators are standing around the track with over 700 curves to watch the racing teams for the last time on the open track.

The Swiss racing driver Herbert Müller starts together with the Dutch racing driver Gijs van Lennep for the Martini Porsche works team and leads the team to a historic success. The racing car is the Martini Porsche 911 Carrera RSR, internally known in the Porsche racing department of Weissach R6. Due to the rule changes and the limitation of the cubic capacity to 3.0 litres for group 5, the RSR came just at the right time. Also because then Porsche boss Fuhrmann was enthusiastic about the idea to build a street-like racing car again and to sell it to customers for motor sports. At his first race George Follmer and Willy Kaushen on the Carrera RSR with the chassis number 911 360 0588 won the GT class at the 6 hours race of Vallelunga, 1973. Also the test for the 24 hours of Le Mans was positive, even if the car was prematurely retired in the race due to a defect in the fuel system. But the victory at the Targa Florio is definitive and of greatest historical value. There were numerous accidents and retirements during the training for the last Targa Florio. Porsche arrived with 3 Carrera RSR and the leading engineer Norbert Singer had everything else in mind than to go home with a victory. Even before the race, Paul Ricard was busy testing and fighting for every second that the cars could run faster. The two left and right rear wings in addition to the ducktail played an important role. Here they glued, experimented and formed with hammer and wood until the ideal shape was achieved. All this was well documented by Singer and his team, which turned out to be a real stroke of luck 45 years later.

“I want the car to be just as original as it was with the Targa”. With this wish the current owner came to England on Lee Maxted-Page, the restorer known as a Porsche specialist. For Lee and his team it was a great honour to restore such a historic racing car to its original condition. At first, a whole three months were spent researching the archives and looking for drawings, pictures and information. The Porsche Museum helped a lot, as did the pictures created under the direction of Norbert Singer. Many other Porsche legends such as Jürgen Barth were also consulted. The car was restored to its original condition “Targa Florio, 1973” in about 18 months. The result can not only be seen, it must be seen, heard and driven. The smallest detail was restored, so for example the holes for the attachment of the two additional tail fins in the body were found again during the restoration and these aluminum parts were fastened left with 3 rivets and right with 4 rivets. Also a result of the test series in Paul Ricard at that time. The beautiful Martini paint on the originally white delivered racing car was meticulously reconstructed and painted like in 1973 partly by hand. The adhesive strips for the windscreen and the rear wings were exactly reproduced by means of pictures. Even the lettering of the amateurs with small platinum adhesive strips was reproduced exactly (whereby the word “Lichtung” was probably copied from the ” Zundung, we will research that again…).

Sunday, 07. July 2019, the weather is cold and wet. The Martini Porsche 911 Carrera RSR is at the start of the Goodwood FOS 2019 hill climb. Porsche racing legend Jürgen Barth (also an original, and completely unrestored!) quickly moves his right foot down. The gas pedal is pushed through and the petrol flows joyfully from the safety tank into the combustion chambers of the roaring boxer engine in the rear of the RSR. The resulting power is transmitted directly to the rear axles. It seems as if the whole car is happy to drive again in its original condition. The tires spin on the first meters and only get grip again shortly before the first corner. Jürgen Barth intercepts the car before the first corner and drives up the track with the engine screaming with happiness. It hardly goes more original…


Der Porsche Carrera RSR aus den 70iger Jahren ist heute ein äussert seltenes Exemplar auf den Rennstrecken. Noch seltener sind Exemplare vom Porsche 917 zu sehen oder die Gruppe C Fahrzeuge Typ 962. Aber einmal im Jahr kommen diese Porsche und viele weitere bei den Spa Classics zusammen um im Rennen noch einmal gegeneinander zu fahren. Historie pur, kann mit erlebt werden bei den Spa Classics. Selten kommt man als Zuschauer so nah an die Rennwagen und/oder an die Rennfahrer. Und mancher der Rennfahrer kennt die Strecke und die Rennwagen wie den Porsche Carrera RSR noch aus seiner aktiven Zeit als Profi. So auch die Porsche Rennlegende Jürgen Barth der mit dem Himmelblauen Porsche Carrera RSR 3.0 auf der schnellen Rennstrecke unterwegs ist. Im Training sowie in der Qualifikation lief noch alles gut, aber kurz vor dem Start zum Rennen blockieren die beiden vorderen Bremsen am RSR und Jürgen Barth kommt mit der vollen Kraft von durchdrehenden Hinterrädern gerade noch in die Boxen. Dieses Rennen ist gelaufen aber das nächste steht schon wieder vor der Tür…

The Porsche Carrera RSR from the 70s is today an extremely rare model on the racetracks. Even rarer are models of the Porsche 917 or the Group C cars type 962. But once a year these Porsche and many more come together at the Spa Classics to race against each other again. Pure history can be experienced at the Spa Classics. As a spectator you rarely get so close to the racing cars and/or the racing drivers. And some of the racing drivers know the track and the racing cars like the Porsche Carrera RSR still from his active time as a professional. So does Porsche racing legend Jürgen Barth, who is on the fast track with the sky blue Porsche Carrera RSR 3.0. In the training as well as in the qualification everything still went well, but shortly before the start of the race the two front brakes on the RSR block and Jürgen Barth comes with the full power of spinning rear wheels just into the pits. This race is over, but the next one is already around the corner…

Neunsiebzehn – Der königliche Rennwagen.

Das Porsche Museum feiert den Porsche 917. Vor 50 Jahren aus der Taufe gehoben und mit Anhieb einer der besten Rennwagen überhaupt. Wie ein Zepter liegt eine Nockenwelle über dem Bild von Ferdinand Piech, der Maßgeblich dazu beigetragen hat das der Porsche 917 gebaut wurde und für Jahre die Rennstrecken dominiert hatte. Die Krone in Form der Zylinder liegt neben einem Bild des genialen Porsche Motoren Konstrukteurs Hans Mezger, der es wie kein anderer Verstand ein Meisterwerk an Motor zu entwickeln. Ganze 10 der seltenen Rennwagen sind im Museum zu besichtigen. Dabei gibt es nicht nur die Rennwagen, unter anderem die beiden Original Le Mans Sieger Wagen von 1970 und 1971, zu bestaunen. Einzigartig ist auch das Konzept und die vielen kleinen Details die dem Besucher der Ausstellung im Porsche Museum geniale Einblicke in die Entwicklung des Rennwagens und in die Renngeschichte blicken lassen. Der große weite der Duft der Boxengasse weht um die ausgestellten Rennwagen und die Luft, die ein zentrales Thema bei der Entwicklung des Porsche 917 gespielt hat, wir dem Besucher mit einem kleinen Windkanal und diversen Modellen verdeutlicht. Man möchte sich ganz nicht mehr trennen von den vielen kleinen Details, von den Geschichten, von den Farben und von den Rennwagen. Wahrscheinlich kommt man wieder ins Museum, schon alleine um die anderen Porsche im Museum zu sehen. Man möchte Nachts alleine im Museum sein, wenn die 917er von den alten Zeiten erzählen….

Nine Seventeen – The Royal Racing Car.

The Porsche Museum celebrates the Porsche 917. Launched 50 years ago and one of the best racing cars ever. Like a sceptre, a camshaft lies over the picture of Ferdinand Piech, who contributed significantly to the fact that the Porsche 917 was built and had dominated the race tracks for years. The crown in the shape of the cylinders lies next to a picture of the ingenious Porsche engine designer Hans Mezger, who developed it like no other mind a masterpiece of engine. A total of 10 of the rare racing cars can be seen in the museum. Not only the racing cars can be admired, including the two original Le Mans winning cars from 1970 and 1971. Also unique is the concept and the many small details that give the visitor to the Porsche Museum exhibition an ingenious insight into the development of the racing car and the history of racing. The great expanse of the smell of the pit lane blows around the exhibited racing cars and the air, which played a central role in the development of the Porsche 917, is illustrated to the visitor with a small wind tunnel and various models. You don’t want to separate from the many small details, from the stories, from the colours and from the racing cars. Probably you will come back to the museum, just to see the other Porsche in the museum. You want to be alone in the museum at night, when the 917s tell about the old times….



Jedes Jahr, Anfang Mai kommt es auf der Trabrennbahn in Dienslaken zu einem ganz besonderen Showlaufen von Pferdestärken. Die Porsche Gemeinde trifft sich auf der Rennbahn und präsentiert sich mit allem was man an Porsche aufbieten kann. Vom Traktor bis hin zu den aktuellen Modellen sieht man den ganzen Tag lang die Autos an- und abfahren. Schaut man sich um, findet man eine menge glückliche Gesichter und es scheint als ob auch die Porsche selber glücklich sind unter ihres gleichen. Diverse Clubs und Vereine präsentieren sich auf der grünen Wiese. So auch Drive for miles, die sich für kranke Kinder einsetzen. Mit über 50 Porsche ist diese Gruppe angereist und auf fast jedem Beifahrersitz glückliche Kinder die den ganzen Tag über mit allem was man braucht betreut wurden. Die zahlreichen Händler bieten alle großen Porsche Modelle auch in klein, Literatur und so manch kleines oder großes Andenken konnte erworben werden. Das Porsche-Gen ist hier auf der Trabrennbahn zu spüren und wer es noch nicht hatte wurde an diesem Tag auf jeden Fall zum Porsche Fan.


Every year, at the beginning of May, there is a very special show run of horsepower on the trotting track in Dienslaken. The Porsche community meets at the racecourse and presents itself with everything that can be found in Porsche. From the tractor to the current models, you can see the cars starting and stopping all day long. If you look around you will find a lot of happy faces and it seems as if the Porsche themselves are happy among their own. Various clubs and associations present themselves on the green meadow. So is Drive for miles, which is dedicated to helping sick children. With over 50 Porsche this group arrived and on almost every co-driver seat happy children were looked after all day long with everything they needed. The numerous dealers offer all large Porsche models also in small, literature and some small or large souvenirs could be acquired. The Porsche gene can be felt here on the trotting track and anyone who hasn’t had it yet has definitely become a Porsche fan on this day.
