The Porsche 956-001 Works

The first

In Paris 2023 at the Retromobile a very special Porsche is offered for sale. It is the first, the first Porsche 956, which was to be followed by far more than 100 other Porsche 956/962s in the course of time. The first 956-001 was built in Weissach and was first driven on the test track by Jürgen Barth on 27 March 1982.

Afterwards, the 956-001 was extensively tested by Jürgen Barth, Jacky Ickx, Roland Kussmaul and Derek Bell. According to information in the book “Excellence was Expected”, the drivers covered 4,244 test miles before Porsche set off for the 6 Hours of Silverstone on 16 May. With the dream team of Bell and Ickx at the wheel, Porsche should have won the race comfortably. But the Porsche covered more kilometres in the 6 hours than it was allowed to use on fuel.

The Lancia LC1 of Riccardo Patrese and Michele Alboreto crossed the finish line first because it had competed in Group 6 last season and was therefore exempt from Group C fuel regulations. So while Lancia could use as much fuel as they wanted and go full speed, the Porsche 001 was destined to be proverbial economical and finished second.  With a lap time 10 seconds slower than the original race pace and only three laps behind Lancia, the race was still a resounding success for Porsche, with victory in the Group C race car class.

The Porsche 956-001 then headed back to Weissach for testing. There it underwent a 30-hour Le Mans test. Its sister cars were allowed to take victory in France in return.

The car contested only one race, a DRM race at the Norisring, where Jochen Mass eventually took a well-deserved victory. The Porsche 956-001 was subsequently retired and presented to Jacky Ickx as a farewell gift at the end of 1985.

In Paris, the racing car stands in its original bodywork and a 2.65-litre boxer engine in the rear. The Porsche still has many of its original parts, even though it has one or two minor imperfections in many places. The dashboard is also unique to the car, all other Porsche 956/962s had a curved version fitted instead of the straight dashboard shown here. But this is only a small footnote in the history of the 956-001. Oh yes the car is for sale 7.500.000 pounds are called! But what is that for the first Porsche 956.

Works Porsche 956 – The Definitive History

Works Porsche 956 – The Definitive History

There are not many racing cars that have won all known and classic races in their time on the race tracks of this world. The Porsche 956 is one of them, if not the only racing car that has achieved victories in series, be it for the factory team or for many private teams. Now you know the famous pictures from the races of Le Mans, when the Porsche 956 crossed the finish line in 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, and also the famous livery in the colors of the sponsor Rothmanns is still well known to many fans, but the amount of information that the renowned automotive journalist Serge Vanbockryck has collected in more than three decades in a monumental work is almost equal to the sporting successes of the Porsche racing car. Serge Vanbockryck has known the automotive scene very well for decades. But despite the many different car brands he has worked for, Vanbockryck’s enthusiasm for Porsche and its motorsport must clearly prevail. How else does one come up with the idea of writing such a monumental 2-volume work with 800 pages and over 800 additional pictures, some of them printed for the first time.

The author tells of the beginnings of Porsche motorsport history from the early 1950s, through the first overall victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, to the almost maxed out Porsche 936 that was successful for Porsche in the early 1980s. The main part of both books deals with the Porsche 956 and its history.

Anyone who has ever seen the Porsche 956 or its further development, the 962, on a race track is fascinated just by looking at the racer when it is not in motion. In 1982, the car brought a completely new, almost futuristic look to the design and construction of a racing car. In the two books, a lot of space is given to the history of the development. Not only the “father” and chief engineer Norbert Singer has his say, but also many of his comrades-in-arms who contributed to its success. Test and racing drivers who tell their view of the story and accurately show the successes as well as setbacks. To this end, dozens of interviews were conducted with drivers such as Jacky Ickx, Derek Bell, Jochen Mass, Vern Schuppan, Stefan Bellof, Al Holbert, Jürgen Barth, Hurley Haywood, Hans-Joachim Stuck, John Watson and Henri Toivonen. For the success of any good Porsche book, a visit by the author to the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart is also part of the process. For this work, which was published by Porter Press International Verlag, Serge Vanbockryck had to visit the Porsche archive in the museum several times. This is evidenced, for example, by the detailed and complete presentation of all chassis numbers in the books.

Works Porsche 956 – The Definitive History, Volume One and Two is a publication for every Porsche enthusiast and Porsche collector. And as rare as it is nowadays to see a Porsche 956 in a collection or on a race track, as rare will be the two books which are only available in a number of 956 copies. However, we are eagerly awaiting the next publication which will deal with the Porsche 962 and its success story. The two books, bound in half-linen and enclosed in a sturdy slipcase, cost a total of 450 pounds. They are available from Porter Press International in England and from well-stocked specialist bookshops. With Works Porsche 956 – The Definitive History, the success story continues for all involved.
