Der junge Porsche. Aus der Jugend des genialen Konstrukteurs

Der junge Porsche.
Herbert Sinz
Fischer, Göttingen
1968

There are a lot of books on the brilliant car designer Ferdinand Porsche, but so far none above his youth. Using the example of Ferdinand Porsche, it is particularly surprising, as man grows from the simple student and apprentice through their own aspiration and iron energy whose creative achievements are felt today. In 1875, he was the son of a master craftsman in Maffersdorf and began in his parents’ business as an apprentice. With diligence be worked technically talented up.

Porsche 959 Jürgen Lewandowski _ Südwest Verlag 1990

Porsche 959
Jürgen Lewandowski
Südwest Verlag
1990

The Porsche 959, built in 1986/87, has already become a legend. Only 200 of the cars were made, and the original price of $ 630,000 has jumped up to well over $ 2,000,000 on the second-hand market.

In this book, Jürgen Lewandowski presents a detailed, fully illustrated account of the development of the 959, from the basic 911 model via the rallye version to the road-going “sports car of superlatives,” supplemented by technical data on all the versions of the car.

The volume also includes a chapter on the racing and rallying history of the 959 and its even more powerful stablemate, the 961, together with a test report on the fastest road-going Porsche ever built.

To the present day, the Porsche 959 is regarded as one of the most exceptional vehicles in automotive history: a technical marvel with its all-wheel drive, a refined biturbo engine, 450 PS and a top speed of 315 km/h – still breathtaking 30 years after its first roll-out.

The idea behind this tour de force was to build a Porsche that fitted the new Group B regulations just established in 1983: the Group B Porsche. The regulations demanded just 200 vehicles for the homologation, that is why Porsche was able to turn the technological knowledge of that time into a super Porsche equally suitable for the race track and for rallies – which was the intention of the new racing car series. Apart from the races, the homologation vehicles were also meant to go to private owners for the use in road traffic.

Jürgen Lewandowski witnessed the development of the Porsche 959 more than 30 years ago and describes the difficult birth of the super car including the three Paris-Dakar rallies and the Le Mans race.

After 30 years, this comprehensive work presents even the minutest details, it comments on events in the past, and contemporary witnesses have their say – all in all it is a literary monument to the Porsche 959.
